Sandy Kupfer

Sandy Kupfer (she/they) is multidisciplinary artist with a focus in painting, tattooing, drawing, and poetry. She is a Los Angeles based artist who grew up in Pennsylvania. Sandy graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from Occidental College in 2022, and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Otis College of Art and Design in December 2024. Sandy’s painting practice is like walking an everlasting tightrope: figurative versus abstract, crude versus masterful, violent versus gentle, muddy colors versus ecstatic ones, demonic versus angelic. Hypersensitivity forces an honest and transparent appraisal of what is depicted. While painting, Sandy is in a process of creating something deeper than she knows, something so basic that it must even precede conscious feeling. Charged energies guide her brush in a feverish manner. Intuition discloses her next move.

Sandy’s process of painting values frequent shifts in duality, or even occupying many various spaces at the same moment. At times it can be a slow dance, the delicious unfolding just before a sensual kiss, or the works may have the intensity of a sudden, brutal and vicious fistfight. This engages the subject in a similar motif where a work can be charged with exuberance and also suffering in the same moment. These paintings do not need to exude accuracy of logic or rationale of this world, as they are actively existing in a realm of their own. The gestural brushstrokes are both caked with paint creating texture and depth, and stripped of abundance, creating a specific kind of delicate and sensitive nature of mark-making. A score is composed in a long winded incremental way while these are created. Those textured brush strokes, the gentle and bare ones, the exuberance of rich color, the muddy in-betweens, the sprint of a mark made, the slow winded premeditated brushstroke. These all act as a manner of orchestrating a vastness of complexity in a subversive way, which utilizes seemingly simple techniques. Sandy’s paintings are non-dual and very polarizing. The works follow a different logic and guideline than our realm, and are composed in a strenuous, yet feverish intensity. These vulnerably charged paintings also inhibit you to experience a level of depth which has the power to reframe and change.
